FREE RADICALS
The unstable molecule that injure skin cells at dna level
Your body constantly reacts with oxygen as you breathe and your cells produce energy. As a consequence of this activity, highly reactive molecules are produced known as free radicals.
The human body is composed of different CELLS,
cells composed of MOLECULES, molecules consist of ATOMS joined by chemical bonds.
Atoms consist of NUCLEUS(PROTONS+, surrounded by ELECTRONS-)
Electrons involved in chemical reactions, this substance bonds atom together to form molecules.
Atom seek to reach a state of max. stability, so 1 unpaired electron(e-) can cause atom into
1. react; gain or loose the electron;
2. or share the electron with other atoms to complete its outer shell=forming free radicals and damage all components of the cell, including proteins, lipids, and DNA.
Free radicals are: very unstable, they react quickly with other compounds to regain stability,
they attack the nearest molecule and steal an electron (which becomes free radical itself) starting a chain reaction causing cell death;

They are a suspect in developing CANCER, Alzheimer’s, ARTHRITIS, HEART DIESASE, DIABETES,+75 other disease that aren’t caused by germs.

• Pollution,
• Sunlight, uv exposure
• Smoking/smoke
• Stress,
• Over exercising,
• Poor diet/Overindulging from food cause: -FREE RADICAL activity and -OXIDATIVE STRESS (cumulative damage caused by free radicals)

Your body’s ability to produce antioxidants (its metabolic process) is controlled by your genetic makeup and influenced by your exposure to environmental factors, such as diet and smoking.

Changes in our lifestyles, which include more environmental pollution and less quality in our diets, mean that we are exposed to more free radicals than ever before.

Your body’s internal production of antioxidants is not enough to neutralise all the free radicals.

ANTIOXIDANTS
are anti aging components of the skin, they quench, neutralize this activity and protect skin from premature aging.
Not enough anti oxidant+ environmental damage=free radical microscopic scar damage when significant wrinkle is born=premature aging!

You can help your body to defend itself by increasing your dietary intake of antioxidants.
• Pomegranates,
• chocolate, 1oz (70%cocoa)
• Red vine, 6oz, grape seeds-bioflavonoid
• Tea
• Black tea, green tea and oolong teas have antioxidant properties.
• Tomatoes contain a pigment called lycopene that is responsible for their red colour but is also a powerful antioxidant. Lycopene is also highly concentrated in watermelon.
• Citrus fruits- Oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes possess many natural substances that appear to be important in disease protection, such as carotenoids, flavonoids, terpenes, limonoids and coumarins. Together these phytochemicals act more powerfully than if they were given separately.

• Trace elements that are components of antioxidant enzymes, such as selenium, copper, zinc and mg
• Non-nutrients such as ubiquinone (coenzyme Q) and phenolic compounds, such as phytoestrogens
